ChatGPT Finances vs Quill: Linked Accounts or Private Statements?
ChatGPT Finances links your bank accounts through Plaid and shows a spending dashboard. Quill takes the other route: you drop in your bank's own statements, Quill proves each one to the cent on your computer, and its assistant proposes changes that only your click applies. One needs a bank link. The other needs none.
Now that ChatGPT can look at your accounts, a fair question comes up: should you link your bank to ChatGPT, or keep your books somewhere that never asks for a bank login? Both are real options, and they suit different people. This is a side-by-side with the facts on both sides. It is part of our guide to an AI financial assistant that does the work, which explains how Quill's assistant is built.
What is ChatGPT Finances?
ChatGPT Finances is a feature of ChatGPT that links your financial accounts through Plaid, then shows a dashboard of your spending, subscriptions, upcoming payments and portfolio. OpenAI describes it on its own page, personal finance in ChatGPT.
It rolled out in steps in the US. It launched on May 15, 2026 for Pro users, reached Plus and Pro users from June 25, 2026, and began rolling out to Free and Go users from October 2, 2026. Plaid connects to more than 12,000 institutions, and OpenAI lists Intuit support as coming soon.
Beyond the dashboard, OpenAI lists weekly insights, credit monitoring, stock watchlists, manual account entry and "Financial memories". It also says the feature is not a replacement for professional financial advice.
What does ChatGPT Finances do well?
It gives you a wide, consolidated view with very little setup, and it covers parts of your money that Quill does not.
- Quick start. You pick your institution through Plaid and the dashboard fills in. There are no files to download.
- Beyond bank accounts. OpenAI lists investments, a portfolio view, stock watchlists and credit monitoring. Quill is built around bank and card statements, not around investments or credit scores.
- Weekly insights. OpenAI lists these as part of the feature.
- A place you may already use. If ChatGPT is already open on your screen, this is one more feature in the same tool.
If those are the things you want, ChatGPT Finances is a reasonable choice. The trade-offs below are about what you give up to get them.
What does Quill do differently?
Quill starts from the statements your bank already prints, and it never asks for your online banking password.
- You download PDF or CSV statements from your bank and drop them in a folder.
- Quill reads them on your computer. There is no bank login, no Plaid and no Quill account to create.
- Quill checks each statement against the totals the bank printed on it, to the cent. A statement that does not add up is flagged, never silently counted.
- The assistant, called Ask Quill, answers from those proved books.
Your transactions live in a file on your own computer. There is no Quill server holding them, so there is no central database of Quill users' money to breach.
ChatGPT Finances vs Quill, side by side
This table sticks to what OpenAI says on its page and what Quill does.
| Question | ChatGPT Finances | Quill |
|---|---|---|
| How do accounts get in? | You link them through Plaid. Manual entry is also offered. | You drop PDF or CSV statements in a folder. No bank login. |
| Where does the data live? | Synced data sits on OpenAI's systems. | In a file on your computer, not on our servers. |
| What can the AI see? | OpenAI says it can access balances, transactions, investments and liabilities, but not full account numbers. | Only what it needs to answer your question, sent to the AI provider you picked. Your PDFs are never uploaded. |
| Can it change your books? | It answers and plans. OpenAI says it cannot make changes to your accounts. | It proposes changes (categories, rules, Personal or Business moves, tax-prep answers). They apply only when you click, after a safety backup. |
| Is the data proved? | Synced feed that ChatGPT categorizes. OpenAI does not describe a check against your bank's printed statements. | Every statement is checked against its printed totals, to the cent. |
| Extras | Credit monitoring, stock watchlists, portfolio view. | Personal and Business kept apart, plus QuickBooks, Profit and Loss and a year-end tax package for your accountant. |
| Price model | A feature of ChatGPT, rolled out by plan. | One-time purchase, no subscription, updates included. |
Where does your data live, and who can see it?
With ChatGPT Finances your synced data sits on OpenAI's systems. With Quill it sits in a file on your computer, and the AI sees only what it needs for each question.
On the ChatGPT side, OpenAI says conversations with connected accounts follow the same model training settings you choose across ChatGPT. After you disconnect, it says synced data is deleted from its systems within 30 days, while past conversations stay unless you delete them. If you link an account, check those training settings first and know that deleting a conversation is a separate step from disconnecting.
Quill has limits too, and we would rather you hear them from us.
- Quill is not fully disconnected from the internet. It checks your licence with our payment provider about once a day and checks GitHub for updates at launch. None of that carries a transaction, balance or merchant.
- Nothing goes to an AI until you ask the assistant something or press an AI button. When you do, a summary of your finances and any charges it looks up go to the provider you picked. That summary includes totals, trends, top categories and merchants, largest charges, subscriptions, and debts with balances and rates.
- Every AI option is a cloud service. With AI switched off, no financial data leaves your computer.
- Quill does not encrypt its own database file. It relies on your computer's disk encryption (FileVault on Mac, BitLocker on Windows), and Settings shows whether that is on. A stolen or infected computer is still a risk.

Does either one prove your numbers?
Quill checks your figures against the bank's own printed totals. OpenAI does not describe any such check for ChatGPT Finances: a linked feed shows what the aggregator sends.
Every statement you import is compared with the totals printed on that statement, to the cent. If the transactions Quill read do not add up to those totals, the statement is flagged for you to look at. It is never quietly added to your totals. The assistant then answers from those checked books, so a number it quotes traces back to a statement you can open.
When your data cannot answer a question, the assistant says "Not in your data." It does not guess, and it treats missing data as missing, never as zero.
Can the assistant change anything on its own?
No. Quill's assistant can look things up and propose changes, but every change waits for your click.
It has a fixed list of 44 actions in three kinds: 15 look-ups that change nothing, 15 buttons it can offer you (such as opening a screen or showing the exact charges), and 14 changes it can propose. A proposal card states how many charges it touches and how much money, and says "Nothing has happened yet." When you click, Quill saves a safety backup first.
There are hard limits. It cannot delete statements or transactions. It cannot move money, pay bills or cancel subscriptions. A bulk change needs a filter and is capped at 500 charges. Text inside a statement or a merchant name is treated as data, never as an instruction.
It is not a licensed financial advisor, it does not recommend investments, and it does not say what is tax-deductible. For taxes it builds a document checklist for your accountant instead. You can see the same approach applied to sorting charges in how to automatically categorize bank transactions.
Which one should you use?
Choose by what you want to hand over and what you want back.
- ChatGPT Finances suits you if you want a fast, broad view across banks, cards and investments, you want credit monitoring and watchlists, and you are comfortable linking accounts through Plaid.
- Quill suits you if you do not want a bank link at all, you want every figure proved against your own statements, you keep Personal and Business apart, or you need files for an accountant.
If you are leaving a cloud budgeting app because of the bank link, our Mint alternative guide covers that move in more detail.
Can you use both?
Yes. Quill's assistant can run on your existing ChatGPT subscription, so choosing Quill does not mean giving up ChatGPT.
You connect your ChatGPT subscription (or your Claude subscription, or an API key from Anthropic, OpenAI or Google) and Quill adds no extra AI fee. Every answer says which AI wrote it. The same privacy rule applies: it is still a cloud service, so what the assistant sends goes to OpenAI when ChatGPT is the one you picked. The difference is that the books it works from stay on your computer and are proved first.
Frequently asked questions
Who can use ChatGPT Finances?
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Finances on May 15, 2026 for Pro users in the US. It reached Plus and Pro users from June 25, 2026, and began rolling out to Free and Go users in the US from October 2, 2026. Check OpenAI's page for your plan and region.
Does Quill connect to my bank?
No. Quill never asks for your online banking password and does not use Plaid or any bank aggregator. You download PDF or CSV statements from your bank yourself and drop them in a folder, and Quill reads them on your computer.
Can Quill's assistant use my ChatGPT subscription?
Yes. You can connect your ChatGPT subscription, your Claude subscription, or an API key from Anthropic, OpenAI or Google, and Quill adds no extra AI fee. It is still a cloud service, so what the assistant sends goes to the provider you picked, and every answer says which AI wrote it.
Is Quill's assistant a financial advisor?
No. It is not a licensed financial advisor, it does not recommend investments, and it does not say what is tax-deductible. It answers from your proved statements, says "Not in your data" when your data cannot answer, and only proposes changes that you approve with a click.
Which one is more private?
With ChatGPT Finances, synced data sits on OpenAI's systems. With Quill, your financial data lives in a file on your computer, and with AI switched off none of it leaves. With AI on, only the provider you chose sees what it needs to answer you. Neither choice removes the risk of a stolen or infected computer.
