How to Import SoFi Statements into QuickBooks

SoFi does not have a native QuickBooks bank feed, so getting SoFi transactions into QuickBooks requires a manual import step. The main decision is how to set up SoFi's combined checking and savings account in your chart of accounts so the data lands in the right place.

How to Import SoFi Statements into QuickBooks

SoFi Bank is a newer digital bank without the deep QuickBooks integrations that traditional banks have built over decades. That means the live bank feed route that works seamlessly with Chase or Wells Fargo is not reliably available for SoFi. Instead, the workflow is: download the SoFi eStatement PDF, convert it to CSV with a local tool, then import the CSV into QuickBooks. It adds one step compared to the bank feed, but it is fully controllable and requires no ongoing connection to your SoFi account.

How to set up SoFi accounts in QuickBooks

Getting the account structure right before your first import saves a lot of cleanup later. SoFi's combined checking and savings account creates a specific decision point.

Option A: Two separate QuickBooks accounts (recommended)

Because the SoFi statement clearly separates checking transactions and savings transactions into two sections with distinct beginning and ending balances, the cleanest approach is to create two accounts in QuickBooks:

When you import the SoFi CSV, split it into two files before importing: one with checking-section transactions and one with savings-section transactions. Import each file into its corresponding QuickBooks account. This gives you an accurate balance for each sub-account in your balance sheet.

Option B: One combined QuickBooks account (simpler)

If you only have occasional SoFi transactions and do not need a precise split between checking and savings in your reports, you can use a single Bank account in QuickBooks (Account Type = Bank, Detail Type = Checking). Import all SoFi transactions into this one account. The combined balance will match your total SoFi balance, but you will lose the checking-vs.-savings distinction in your reports.

For most self-employed people and small businesses using SoFi primarily for spending, Option B is practical. For anyone who uses SoFi savings as a dedicated holding account for tax money or an emergency fund, Option A gives you the cleaner tracking.

Step 1: Get your SoFi transactions into CSV format

Since SoFi does not offer a direct CSV export, you need to convert the eStatement PDF first.

Quill converts SoFi Bank eStatement PDFs to CSV entirely on your own computer. No upload, no account connection, no SoFi credentials shared with any third party.

Step 2: Prepare the CSV for QuickBooks

QuickBooks Online's CSV upload expects at minimum three columns: Date, Description, and Amount. The Amount should be signed: negative for money leaving the account, positive for money coming in. Confirm your SoFi CSV is in this format before importing.

Handling the internal transfer rows

SoFi's statement prints a debit in the checking section and a credit in the savings section whenever you move money between the two sub-balances. In your CSV, these appear as a negative row (the outgoing side) and a positive row (the incoming side). Both rows are real transaction rows on the statement, so they will be in your CSV.

Before importing, tag these rows clearly, or handle them during the import review step in QuickBooks. In QuickBooks, the correct treatment is to record them as a Transfer between your SoFi Checking and SoFi Savings accounts rather than as expenses or income. If you use the single-account approach (Option B above), exclude one side of the transfer to avoid double-counting the same dollars.

Step 3: Import the CSV into QuickBooks Online

Review the imported rows and categorize them. Spending goes to expense accounts, income goes to income accounts, and transfers between SoFi accounts use QuickBooks' Transfer category.

Step 4: Import into QuickBooks Desktop (if applicable)

QuickBooks Desktop uses a slightly different import path for CSV files:

QuickBooks Desktop's CSV import is less smooth than QuickBooks Online's. If you are on Desktop and find the import frustrating, consider converting the SoFi CSV to OFX format using a free conversion tool, then importing the OFX file through the WebConnect path instead.

Categorizing SoFi transactions in QuickBooks

Spending and payments

Debit card purchases, bill payments, and ACH debits from the checking section are expenses. Assign each to the appropriate expense account: groceries, utilities, software subscriptions, travel, etc. SoFi's transaction descriptions are generally clean, so auto-categorization rules in QuickBooks often do a good job after the first few manual assignments.

Interest income

SoFi pays interest on the savings portion, and the credit appears in the savings section of each statement. In QuickBooks, assign these to an "Interest Income" account. SoFi will issue a 1099-INT at year end for interest over the IRS reporting threshold, and having a dedicated income account makes verification straightforward.

SoFi loan payments from a SoFi bank account

If you have a SoFi personal loan and the monthly payment is debited from your SoFi bank account, those payment rows appear in the checking section as debits. These are not expenses in the traditional profit-and-loss sense. The interest portion is an expense (Interest Expense), but the principal portion is a liability paydown. If you are tracking SoFi loan balances in QuickBooks, split each payment into its interest and principal components. If you are not tracking the SoFi loan formally in QuickBooks, at minimum create a "Loan Payments" expense category to distinguish these rows from ordinary spending.

Cash bonuses and promotions

SoFi occasionally credits promotional bonuses (direct deposit bonuses, referral bonuses) to the account. These appear as credits in the statement. Use an "Other Income" account or a dedicated "Bank Bonuses" income account for these so they do not inflate your regular revenue figures.

No ongoing SoFi connection needed: once you have converted the eStatement PDF to CSV and imported it into QuickBooks, there is nothing to maintain or reconnect. Each month, download the new statement, convert, and import. Your SoFi bookkeeping stays current with full control and no third-party credential sharing.

Reconciling SoFi in QuickBooks

After importing each month, reconcile the QuickBooks register against the SoFi statement. In QuickBooks Online, go to Accounting > Reconcile, select the SoFi account, and enter the ending balance and statement date from the SoFi eStatement. If you track checking and savings as two separate accounts, reconcile each one individually against its respective ending balance on the statement. Check off each transaction until the difference reaches zero. Any remaining difference indicates a missing transaction or a sign error worth investigating before you close the period.

Frequently asked questions

Does SoFi Bank connect directly to QuickBooks Online?

SoFi does not have a native verified QuickBooks bank feed. The reliable import path is to download the SoFi eStatement PDF, convert it to CSV with a local tool, and import the CSV manually into QuickBooks. This avoids sharing SoFi credentials with a third-party aggregator and gives you full control over what gets imported.

How should I set up SoFi's combined checking and savings account in QuickBooks?

The cleanest approach is two separate QuickBooks bank accounts: one for the checking sub-balance (Detail Type = Checking) and one for the savings sub-balance (Detail Type = Savings). Transfers between the two show up in both statement sections; record them as Transfers in QuickBooks rather than income or expenses to avoid double-counting.

How do I categorize SoFi interest income in QuickBooks?

Assign all SoFi interest credits to an "Interest Income" account in QuickBooks. SoFi issues a 1099-INT at year end if interest exceeds the IRS reporting threshold. A dedicated income account makes it easy to match QuickBooks to the 1099-INT figure when you file.
