How to Import Truist Statements into QuickBooks

Truist works with QuickBooks through a live bank feed, an OFX or CSV download for recent history, and a PDF converter for anything older - including legacy SunTrust and BB&T statements from before the merger. Here is how each route works.

How to Import Truist Statements into QuickBooks

Truist was formed from the SunTrust and BB&T merger in 2019, which means long-time customers may have transaction history spread across three different statement formats: legacy BB&T, legacy SunTrust, and current Truist. Getting all of that into QuickBooks requires understanding which route to use for which period. The good news is that once you know the right path for each format, the process is straightforward.

Route 1: Live bank feed in QuickBooks Online

For ongoing bookkeeping, the most efficient setup is connecting Truist directly to QuickBooks Online. New transactions pull in automatically and you categorize them inside QuickBooks at your own pace.

To connect:

The live feed does not reach back into periods before the connection was set up. If you connect today and need transactions from last year, you will not get those through the feed. Use the export or PDF routes below for historical data.

Route 2: Truist OFX export for QuickBooks Desktop

Truist's activity download includes an OFX file option, which is the standard Web Connect format that QuickBooks Desktop imports natively. This is the cleanest path for QuickBooks Desktop users who need recent Truist history without a live connection.

Truist's activity download covers a window of recent transaction history. For anything older than the download window, move to the PDF approach below.

Route 3: CSV import into QuickBooks Online

For QuickBooks Online users who prefer not to use a live bank feed, Truist's CSV export is a reliable manual alternative for recent transaction history.

Route 4: Convert older Truist PDF statements and import

For any period outside Truist's download window, the official PDF statement is the only source. This includes all history from legacy SunTrust and BB&T periods before the merger transition.

Step 1: Download the PDF from Truist

If you need legacy SunTrust or BB&T statements that are not accessible through Truist's portal, you may need to contact Truist's customer service to request older records. They can typically provide statements going back several years even for migrated accounts.

Step 2: Extract transactions with a local converter

Truist PDF statements use a formatted table with separate withdrawal and deposit columns, a running balance, and page-level headers. Copying this into a spreadsheet does not produce usable data: columns shift, amounts mix with descriptions, and the balance column creates extra noise.

A PDF converter that understands the Truist statement layout reads the table structure directly and outputs one clean row per transaction: date, description, and a single signed amount (debits negative, credits positive).

Quill parses Truist statement PDFs - as well as legacy SunTrust and BB&T formats - locally on your computer. Drop in the file and it extracts every transaction and exports to CSV ready for QuickBooks. No upload, no cloud account, no bank login required.

Step 3: Import the CSV into QuickBooks

For QuickBooks Online:

For QuickBooks Desktop, the most practical path for CSV data is using the QuickBooks Import Data utility, or entering larger batches via journal entry for small sets of transactions.

Privacy note: Truist PDF statements contain your account number, routing number, and a complete transaction record for the period. Using a local converter like Quill means the file is processed entirely on your own machine - nothing uploaded to a third-party server, and no external service with access to your statement.

Handling legacy SunTrust and BB&T statements in QuickBooks

For customers who lived through the SunTrust and BB&T merger, getting pre-Truist history into QuickBooks requires a bit of extra attention:

Account number changes

During the Truist migration, many account numbers changed. If your QuickBooks ledger was set up under the old SunTrust or BB&T account number, importing transactions from Truist statements under the new number may require mapping to the existing account rather than creating a new one. Check your QuickBooks chart of accounts before importing to make sure you are posting to the right ledger entry.

Matching migrated transactions

If you used a live bank feed in QuickBooks before the merger, the feed may have stopped when Truist migrated the accounts. Any gap period between when the old feed stopped and when you connected Truist is best filled by exporting from Truist's activity download and importing via CSV.

Legacy credit card accounts

SunTrust and BB&T credit cards were migrated to Truist credit cards on different timelines. If you have PDF statements from the legacy card programs, convert them to CSV using a local tool and import them the same way as checking account data. Tag any balance transfer transactions or promotional rate expirations carefully so they do not inflate expense totals.

Frequently asked questions

Does Truist Bank connect directly to QuickBooks Online?

Yes. QuickBooks Online supports a live bank feed connection to Truist that pulls in new transactions automatically going forward. The initial sync covers roughly 90 days. For older periods, use Truist's activity export or convert PDF statements with a local tool.

Can I import old SunTrust or BB&T PDF statements into QuickBooks?

Yes. Convert the legacy PDF to CSV using a local tool that handles those statement formats, then import the CSV into QuickBooks Online via the manual upload feature. The process is the same as for current Truist statements.

What file format does Truist export for QuickBooks Desktop?

Truist's activity download includes an OFX format option, which imports directly into QuickBooks Desktop via the Web Connect Files feature. For QuickBooks Online, use the CSV option and upload it through the manual upload feature in the Banking section.
