Is It Safe to Connect Your Bank to ChatGPT?

Linking your bank to ChatGPT is a real trade-off, not a scam. OpenAI says ChatGPT can see balances, transactions, investments and liabilities, but not full account numbers, and cannot change your accounts. Your synced data sits on OpenAI's systems until you disconnect. Here is what that means and what to check first.

Is It Safe to Connect Your Bank to ChatGPT?

ChatGPT now has a Finances feature, and it asks you to link your bank. Before you click, it helps to know exactly what you are agreeing to. This guide sticks to what OpenAI and Plaid say themselves. It is part of our look at the most private personal finance app.

How does connecting your bank to ChatGPT work?

You link your accounts through Plaid, a company that connects apps to banks. ChatGPT then syncs and categorizes your data and shows a dashboard of spending, subscriptions, upcoming payments and portfolio.

OpenAI describes the feature on its page, personal finance in ChatGPT. It launched on May 15, 2026 for Pro users in the US, reached Plus and Pro from June 25, 2026, and began rolling out to Free and Go users in the US from October 2, 2026. Plaid says it connects to more than 12,000 institutions.

What can ChatGPT see once you link?

OpenAI says ChatGPT "can access your balances, transactions, investments, and liabilities." It also says ChatGPT "cannot see full account numbers or make any changes to your accounts."

That is a meaningful limit. It cannot pay a bill or move your money. But balances and every transaction are still your full financial picture, and that picture is stored on OpenAI's systems while you stay connected.

The key point: linking is not the same as sharing a screenshot. Your synced data lives on someone else's servers until you disconnect, and your chats about it stay until you delete them.

What does ChatGPT do with that data?

OpenAI says conversations with connected accounts "follow the same model training settings you choose across ChatGPT." So your training setting matters here. Check it before you link, not after.

OpenAI also says it "is not a replacement for professional financial advice." Treat answers as a starting point and verify any number you plan to act on.

What happens when you disconnect?

OpenAI says synced data is deleted from its systems within 30 days after you disconnect. Past conversations stay unless you delete them.

Disconnecting also has a Plaid side. Plaid's Portal at my.plaid.com lists the apps you have connected and lets you disconnect them. Plaid explains the steps in its guide on disconnecting your accounts from an app. Disconnecting stops future sharing. To remove data an app already collected, you have to ask that app.

What should you check before you link?

Run through this short checklist first.

  1. Open ChatGPT's data settings and look at your model training choice.
  2. Turn on multi-factor sign-in for your ChatGPT account, since it now guards a view of your money.
  3. Decide whether to use a temporary chat for sensitive questions, so they do not sit in your history.
  4. Link only the accounts you actually want analyzed.
  5. Write down how you will disconnect, and where your Plaid Portal is.
  6. Remember that deleting chats is separate from disconnecting.

None of this makes linking reckless. It makes it a choice you make with your eyes open. We cover the wider question in whether it is safe to share bank statements with finance apps.

Is there a way to get AI help without a bank link?

Yes. You can keep a bank link out of the picture by working from statements you download yourself.

Quill reads your PDF or CSV statements on your computer. There is no bank login, no Plaid and no Quill account. It checks each statement against the totals your bank printed on it, to the cent. Your statement files are never uploaded anywhere, even with AI on.

Quill has limits, and you should know them. It does go online for two small jobs: it checks your licence about once a day and checks GitHub for updates at launch, and none of that carries transaction data. Its AI is optional and every AI option is a cloud service. With AI on, only the provider you chose sees what it needs to answer you, which is a summary of your finances plus any charges it looks up. With AI off, none of it leaves. A stolen or infected computer is still a risk, so keep FileVault or BitLocker on.

If your main worry is the bank link itself, our guide to a Mint alternative with no bank login shows the same idea in a budgeting setting.

Who is linking a good fit for?

Linking suits people who want a broad, automatic view and are comfortable with the trade-off. It fits you well in these cases.

It fits less well if you run a business and need clean Personal and Business books, if you need proof that your totals match your bank's statements, or if you simply do not want a copy of your money on someone else's servers. OpenAI does not describe a check of synced figures against printed statements, so verify any number you plan to act on.

What should you ask any finance app before linking?

The same questions apply to ChatGPT and to every other app that asks for a bank link.

  1. What exactly does it read: balances, transactions, investments, liabilities?
  2. Where is the synced data stored, and for how long after I disconnect?
  3. Is my data used to train models, and can I turn that off?
  4. Can it change anything in my accounts, or only read?
  5. How do I disconnect, and how do I delete what it already collected?

If an app cannot answer these in plain words, treat that as your answer.

So, is it safe to connect your bank to ChatGPT?

It can be reasonable if you accept the trade-off: broad convenience in return for your synced data sitting with OpenAI. Check your training setting, secure your account, and know how to disconnect.

If you would rather never create that copy of your money in the first place, work from your own statements. Quill's assistant can even run on the ChatGPT subscription you already pay for, so you can keep ChatGPT without handing over a bank link.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT see my full bank account number?

OpenAI says ChatGPT cannot see full account numbers. It says it can access your balances, transactions, investments and liabilities. Read OpenAI's page for the current wording.

Can ChatGPT move money or change my accounts?

OpenAI says it cannot make any changes to your accounts. Its stated direction is to go from answers to action through partners, so recheck that page over time.

What happens to my data when I disconnect?

OpenAI says synced data is deleted from its systems within 30 days of disconnecting. Past conversations stay unless you delete them yourself, so disconnecting and deleting chats are two separate steps.

Is there a way to use AI on my finances without linking my bank?

Yes. Quill reads the PDF or CSV statements you download yourself, on your computer, with no bank login. Its AI assistant only sees what it needs to answer your question, and you can switch AI off.
